Platelet count

Adult normal range: 150,000 ~ 400,000 µL

Pediatric Reference Range: Newborns 1 week: 150,000 ~ 250,000 µL

Purposes of test:

Lower than normal:

thrombocytopenia which can be caused by hemorrhagic diseases, acute myelocytic leukemia, drug allergy, congenital causes and neutropenia.

Higher than normal (thrombocytosis):

polycythemia (high red cell count), essential thrombocytosis, following spleenectomy, infections, anemia, iron deficiency, malignant lymphoma, hemorrhage, response to exercise.
