monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI)

A drug that interferes with the action of the enzyme monoamine oxdase in the brain to slow down the breaking down of certain neurotransmitters. Used in the treatment o depression.
Examples of MAO type A Inhibitors:
isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), tranylcypromine (Parnate)
